That's it. Just wanted to say that as I listen to him introduce The Natural.
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power?

Baseball's Back! (aka I don't Wanna Talk About College Basketball Anymore)
Opening Night is here!
(ESPN did away with Opening Day a few year's back to get an extra Sunday Night Baseball in, which is a small small price to pay for another evening with Joe Morgan and Jon Miller)
I'm excited once again that baseball season is starting. I had been out of the loop the last few years for a variety of reasons but, thanks to the lure of Fantasy Baseball, it again feels like the start to baseball season for me. I'll be getting more into my Fantasy team shortly, but I feel I need closure on this College Basketball season first.
No more Terps. I can deal with that. They had a great run and made a very frustrating and confusing season exciting again. As well as setting the tone for what I feel will be an even better team come next year. There was an era of apathy around MD basketball following 4/1/02 and that seems to have worked its way out of the system. Our backcourt looks good, for a long time to come and with the big men who are coming back, we should only have to rely on a couple guys to step up or come in and make a contribution who we didn't have this year.
No more Hoyas. Jesus. You obviously planned well to get Oden into foul trouble. But, from the looks of it, you didn't plan on that working because you looked surprised when it happened. Too many turnovers in the 1st half without Oden around and so they were behind when Oden came back in in the 2nd when they should have been far enough ahead to control the tempo better.
No more Bruins. Wow. I really thought Afflalo was going to be the Final Four MVP. That's all I'm going to say about that one, but the Gators are most definitely going to repeat as champions. They will get Oden into foul trouble. . .or allow him to do it himself, then they will pick the Buckeyes apart piece by piece. And that's coming from someone who hates the Gators. Hates them. I hope Billy Donovan and his starting five all leave after Monday (they all will) and leave the UF in ruins. No good coaching candidates out there to take the job and an incoming class who show up to a very different situation that they agreed to earlier. Maybe a few of them will even bolt. I don't think you have to sit out if you transfer because your coach and recruiter just left.
Congratulations Gators. At least now we'll have one less thing to say Dook is the only team to do.

Reflections from the Recliner
The first weekend of the NCAA Tourney is winding to a close as we speak. No close games left so I'm calling everything that's got time left. What's up with Texas today? Didn't even really look like they were interested in a comeback. I'm assuming this is the last we'll see of Kevin Durant. I can't blame him for leaving. His stock probably couldn't get much higher and seeing what happened to Shawn Livingston a few weeks back, cash in while you can kids. Anyways. . .Congratulations USC.
And then there's Maryland. What an abysmal performance from a senior-heavy team. Atrocious from the foul line. And while there was a terrible call at the end of the game which could have given us a legitimate chance to take the lead when it counted, it shouldn't have come down to that. I hate Butler. Still no love for the mid-majors. ACC only has 1 team in the Sweet 16. First time since the 80s, I think. We should be returning a nice core of 4 players and some bench guys. Gist, Osby, Vasquez and Hayes. Just missing a 3. Maybe Landon Milbourne? Maybe? C'mon Gary. Recruit us some talent.
Speaking of talent, the award for Hottest Cheerleader or Cheerleader-type quad for this Tourney goes to the ladies of Texas A&M. The Governor was sitting mere feet away from them when he pointed them out to me and upon further review, we had ourselves a winner. Congratulations ladies. Onward and upward.
CBS is still terrible at managing the first weekend of the Tourney. Terrible.
Memphis looked pretty good today. Really good from the FT line. ("They call 'em free for a reason) If they can make their foul shots, they might be tough to beat. A&M will have to shut them down early and get out in front of them.
I still have 11 of the Sweet 16 and all of my Elite 8 teams survived the first weekend. Go me!
Lon Kruger. Way to go. Taking your UNLV Running Rebels to the Sweet 16 with your kid, who looks exactly like you, at the helm. And to Vandy. Continuing to beat good teams in big games. I thought WSU could continue to play over their head one more day, but apparently not. Georgetown looks good though, so the run for Vandy should end next week.
I think I need to start preparing for my Fantasy Baseball draft.

Ohio State, Florida, UNC & Kansas
As much as i hate to give it to them and take it away from UCLA, KU is playing in a great Big 12 Championship game with TX right now. They've just gone to overtime thanks to a last second 3-pointer from Chalmers. Durant is 2 points away from owning the single-game scoring record for the Big 12 Tourney. He's so good. Danny Ainge of the Boston Celtics' front office was sitting next to Durant's momma at yesterday's game. "I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I didn't know who he was." Love it.
So those are the #1s.
OSU in the Midwest
Florida in the South
UNC in the East
KU out West
Joe Lunardi, of Bracketology fame, and I only disagree on 1 pick. He has Drexel in, I have Illinios. Not too bad for the Kidd. By the way, I think he's wrong about Drexel. He does, however, have my MD Terps playing TX in the second round next weekend, which would be nice. They look exhausted.
It's been a great weekend of Conference Tourney action. Hope you got to enjoy some of it. If it's any indication of next week's action, we're all in for a treat. I was a little bummed that MD & UCLA lost out in their openers, but the Hoyas won big in the Big East Final against a good Pitt team. I almost wanted to give them a #1 seed, but the #1s have earned it and G'Town can continue to fly under the radar with a #2. Go get 'em Hoyas.
I really gotta stop picking sentimentally. My Conference brackets got all blown to hell. Although with all the lesser seeds winning the first day of the ACC and across the country, maybe it wasn't my sentimentality's fault.
KU may have just sealed the deal with :13.2 to play, going up 5.
Prove me wrong!
Abrams for 3! 86-84 TX :08.4 to go.
They call 'em free for a reason. Robinson drills 2 FTs with :05.3 to go to put KU back up 4.
No fouls! No fouls!
No foul. Durant misses the 3. Game over. Durant still 2 points away from that record.
Thanks for winning and making the call easier KU. Enjoy the #1 seed. I guess you've earned it. Great comeback from being down early.
Off to stare at the brackets. If only there wasn't a Gumble involved.

Another ACC Classic
Wow. For a while I thought NC State was going to do it. They were keeping it close. Then it looked like UNC would pull away like they have in so many other games this season. Then, with 5 minutes left, it was a great game again. NC State refused to go away and had played their way to a legitimate chance to get to the NCAA Tourney. It was not meant to be though. UNC only missed 1 FT all day which is what made it possible to keep NCSU at arms length.
Too bad for Sidney Lowe. I expect he'll have the Wolfpack ready for a big push in the NIT and will undoubtedly be ready for a big season next year.
For UNC, the win probably means a #1 seed. I'm still waiting for the Big 12 and Big 10 Finals before readjusting my #1 seeds, but the rest of the (my) field seems pretty set.
I'd prefer to see TX blow out KS and a great game from OSU/WI so we can stop talking about KS as a #1.

Money! It’s Gotta Be the Shoes
Mars was right, except the shoes were bad. Oh so bad. Maryland was apparently wearing new shoes at the beginning of the game today. We definitely came out sluggish and I don’t know if it’s gotta be the shoes or not, but I really don’t get the decision to switch shoes when you’ve just won 7 in a row. They should be wearing the same damn shoes they’ve been wearing for the last month. It didn’t help that we shot 57% from the line either.
Damn. Still think we’ll get a 5(ish) seed in the NCAAs, but it would have been nice to pick up another easy win before next week starts. At least we’ll be well-rested and Gary should have plenty to yell about.

5 for 6
Sorry Herb.
Washington pulled it out at the end but you put a good fight. He'll have that ASU program turned around in no time though.
